Following a bright and sunny day, the evening of December 4th turned cold and wet; it didn’t look good for the Parish Council Annual Christmas Tree Switch On Event.

However, the village square was soon full of festive cheer and happiness as those who had braved the weather sang along with gusto to the Bulkington Silver Band and the Wolvey Choirs. The sound of carols filled the air, children’s wide smiles lit up the spinning Merry-Go-Round, while others clouded their faces in candyfloss as adults chatted and enjoyed the warming atmosphere.

Following a countdown, Alan and Marian Mitchell (who run the Village Store) switched on the Christmas Tree lights, to a huge cheer from old and young alike. Immediately, the Square looked magical, lights sparkled like precious diamonds in the rain and the tree was topped by a beautiful star - symbol of Hope and Christmas Celebration.

Mulled wine, mince pies and plenty of mirth were served in the Village Hall. There were opportunities for revellers to scrutinize and comment on displays depicting village activities, a stall to purchase hand crafted gifts for Christmas, more carol singing, and to top it all a Jitterbug Demonstration, which was great fun.

The Big Switch On created a fantastic atmosphere that enhances the sense of community and cohesion that is so prevalent in Wolvey Village.
